News of Your Engagement

The next time I hear a song that carries me back

to a comforting plateau in your eyes,

I will not recall how our dancing esteem was halted, by the door

broken down by the three-german-officer scoul on your face.

Instead I will think on the quaintness of your shared mobile phone plan,

and it's proclaim of 21st century commitment,

the defeat of your two car garage,

and the Sundays spent organizing things for which you have no use,

your slowing metabolism and I will share ample laughter,

in the face of your planned meals, as your nightly walks lessen,

and I will have my compass ready, to chart the waters

of widening doubt, between your night-stand and his.

The next time I hear that song we used to sing together,

I will think of your stereo, chewing it's cord from the wall,

desiring freedom and a more spontaneous soundtrack,

far removed from religion and support groups,

and the person you split the utility bills with.
